FLCL - Misimpersonation

Thoughts On: FLCL

The unamazing life of a young boy explodes into pandemonium when he is hit by a vespa.

FLCL is a tremendous piece of animation with a plethora of awe-inspiring sequences smashed along a near nonsensical narrative of chaos and wacky brilliance. Pure visual quality, FLCL has full focus on its insane artistry, replacing breadth of character and story with evocative symbolism and consistent intertext. Sometimes a blur thanks to its boisterously rapid movement along an illusive plot with no trustworthy exposition, there is an alienating quality to FLCL. However, where this may dizzy and deter some, I am of the group that could re-watch this time and time again. What captures my attention second to the visual flair in this masterwork is its expression of a young boy's experience of love and infatuation. His romantic interests are pure autonomic chaos that tear into his life without real recognition of who he truly is. However, in experiencing himself as a romantic entity - not himself, but an imago - he starts his journey of becoming. And such conjures a rather phenomenal and endearing vision of growth that vibes off of the visual mayhem powerfully. Can't wait to see it again.
