White Noise - Befuddle
Thoughts On: White Noise (2022)
An eruption of toxic cloud shakes the mortal sensibilities of an eccentric suburban family.
Quite close to nonsense, White Noise is a somewhat cacophonous collision of ideas held together by great dialogue and characterisation - Baumbach's strong-suit for sure. There are strong thematic strains connected to death anxiety and panic brought to life by unreasonably articulate characters in White Noise. They compose an absurd yet relatable narrative that defies interpretation and yet remains enthralling from start to end. I would struggle to convince myself of a conclusion to this film, but would nonetheless watch it again without a doubt. Driver is great - just as he was in Marriage Story - so I'd be fascinated to see him produce more work with Baumbach. Baumbach himself has relocated his precise and profound approach to narration within the absurd with White Noise to pretty tremendous effect; so deeper down this rabbit hole I'd be willing to go with his work. Intriguing to say the least, I highly recommend this.
