Kneecap - Irish Film
Thoughts On: Kneecap (2024)
The rise of an Irish hip-hop tri.
A punchy and pugnacious, Kneecap is a belligerent and feisty dramatization of the making of an Irish hip-hop trio starring and made in part by the music group themselves, and hinged upon Irish language. It layers thick comedy, cheek, politics and character through music, a primary intention of the narrative most definitely to provoke and sensorily move. But while provocation is one of the clear intentions of Kneecap, clarity in its explosion of drugs, music and political discourse isn't exact. Without delving into this particular detail, it must be said that Kneecap most certainly posses a captivating tone/voice and an overt style. It uses this to strike a strong story with twisted but rounded characters, thereby leaving a valid question of--could this be an artistic (and Irish) cousin to Trainspotting and This Is England. Such is perhaps the highest thing to be said of Kneecap; I could certainly see this being used as a key example of modern Irish cinema as a related distinction from British film. A good watch.
