Vivacious Lady - Romantic Chaos
Thoughts On: Vivacious Lady (1938)
A professor attempts to introduce his newfound wife to his family.
The old screwball comedies from the 30s almost certainly have my favourite notion of romance captured within; it's simple chaos. At once there is no question of the bond between characters, and it is never truly broken but for a moment perhaps, but constantly around it is an endless cacophony of stupidity that eventually mellows out to a funny hum. Direct in its plotting and concept, Vivacious Lady remains confined in its world and yet finds so much depth in its narrative situation; it is one that expresses the necessity for insanity in ones attempt to capture peace, and anarchy in their manifestation of security. Earnest as it is funny, this is timelessly hilarious and captures some of the biggest personalities in moving picture history on their finest and most alluring form; a true pleasure to watch.
