Dragon Ball Super: Broly - Die To Do It Again

Thoughts On: Dragon Ball Super: Broly (2018)

Broly awakens.

My favourite slice of Dragon Ball insanity; I watch this like a music video every couple of months. Broly captures my favourite aspect of Dragon Ball without distraction: as much as it can be about saving the world, retaining moral honour and defeating evil, Dragon Ball is most fundamentally about the infinite progression of inner power with no reason or meaning, about bringing yourself to the edge of death (or, even better, actual death, so you can figure a way to come back) with a smile to see what is really worthy of destroying you, and then denying it; only to then embolden the source of your near-destruction so a greater, harder battle can be waged in the future so you might actually, finally die (though probably not). What a life. Every moment of the hour long rampage of screams, explosions and pretty violence that is the delectable music of this chaotic masterpiece of animation signifies that Broly is just that player. He is what waits beyond the gods, the true challenger Vegeta, Goku and Frieza alike can't help but nurture. In him is the destruction of everything; Frieza can do nothing but marvel at it while being slapped about, and Goku/Vegeta have to cheat to stand a chance at placating it shortly. As much as I'd love to see more from Broly, I'm content as an idiot can be to simply watch this again and again. Such fun.
