Nabil El Gamil Plastic Surgeon - Amusing Cacophony

Thoughts On: Nabil El Gamil Plastic Surgeon (2022)

Catastrophe continuously strikes the life of Egypt's best plastic surgeon.

Nabil El Gamil is an insane comedy written to roll at a thousand miles per hour. It has some funny jokes and absurdly comedic moments, but they are caught between a blizzard of random leaps in the plot and a storm of gags. There can then be a bit too much going on to fully track and pay attention to characters, but their ridiculous antics do come together to allow a Chaplin-esque narrative of honest bumbling and genuine stupidity overcoming bullysome oafs with petty power to ring through in the end. The style itself, the speed of the editing and the rapidity of the plot twists, feels at points to allude to the works of Jean Pierre-Jeunet, providing the film with a slightly endearing tone. So despite the cacophonous nature of the comedy and the barriers preventing the full translation of linguistic comedy, Nabil El Gamil is pretty amusing and an interesting example of Egyptian comedy.
